9 places to visit in Montenegro in Winter
Τhe beautiful country of Montenegro impresses with its natural beauty, impressive landscapes, fine wine and warm people. The bay of Κotor is possibly the destination that gathers the most visitors! We also loved the gorgeous landscapes of Perast and the breathtaking sunset views in Tivat! Budva is a lovely town to explore, filled with little streets with hidden gems and beautiful shops. Our favorite place is Žabljak, maybe one of the most beautiful places we have ever been in wintertime.
Montenegro is among the most beautiful countries we have ever seen! If you exclude Podgorica, which is considered a dull and with not so much interest town to visit, the rest of the towns we visited impressed us with the beauty of their natural landscape and the welcoming locals. We traveled to the country on a six day itinerary, toured to the most famous cities and the best attractions! Here are our top 9 places to visit in Montenegro in winter.
Podgorica

Walk downtown to Podgorica and explore the city centre! We loved walking by the Millennium bridge especially at night! We visited the famous square of Podgorica, walked in some shops with clothing and souvenirs! Podgorica does not look like a typical capital. There are not so many points of sightseeing like in other capitals! You may visit the Cathedral of the Resurrection of Christ, the Russian singer-songwriter Vladimir Visotsky statue, the Independence Square and the fountain being there! The Clock Tower of Podgorica, one of the few Ottoman landmarks sits in a very central point of the city! It is located at Bećir Beg Osmanagić square in the Stara Varoš neighborhood.
Kotor

Take a one-day trip to Kotor! Kotor is probably the most popular coastal city to visit in Montenegro! Kotor holds such a beautiful scenery! The photos we took look like a cardpostal! Walk by the seaside, take a photo by the sea and the luxurious yatchs! There is a shopping mall also if you wish to buy clothing and other stuff. Explore the old town, walk by the little alleys, find hidden gems and climb steps to get some great views of Kotor! The highlight of our visit to Kotor has been the hike to Kotor Castle! To visit the highest viewpoint of the castle a good physical condition is required, but once you get on the top the view is breathtaking! You get good views all the way up to the castle, however the best view is on the top!
Perast

Spend a day to explore Perast, a small picturesque town, which is near Kotor! We loved the serenity the town holds in the winter! The landscape is gorgeous! Walk through the promenade, explore the cobble streets and little alleys, photograph the local houses and beautiful mansions. We had a delicious lunch at a local restaurant! The food has been delicious and the staff lovely!
Budva

Explope the beautiful down of Budva! Walk by the beach, explore Budva’s hidden streets, visit the Castle and its museum! We visited Budva shopping area to buy shoes and clothing! We visited Budva’s famous Roman altar of 1st century. Budva is known for having a statue of little mermaid. There is no access to the mermaid statue in the winter, however you may get close enought to take a nice photo!
Tivat

Tivat is another beautiful coastal town that is worth to visit! Porto Montenegro is in Tivat town! It is a high-end waterfront area, a large marina for superyachts, it hosts luxurious shopping stores, and nice restaurants. Tivat has some of the most beautiful sunsets we have ever seen!
Žabljak

Visit Žabljak, Montenegro’s beautiful mountain town! We visited this gorgeous town during the snowtime! The scenery was magical! During December most of the mansions and guesthouses are not in operation, however if we visit Žabljak in the future we would choose the winter again!

Durmitor National Park and the Blacklake

From Žabljak town centre walk 20 minutes or drive 5 minutes to Durmitor National Park and the Blacklake! There are 18 glacier lakes, known as ”mountain eyes”. The most known of those lakes is the black lake, which is located by the conifer forest and has an emerald green colour! Walk by the forest, there are a few waterfalls to discover while you across the lake! We enjoyed a delicious lunch and good wine in Durmitor Park’s Restaurant and strongly recommend it!
Gorica hill

Hike or cycle to the top of Gorica hill! On the top of the hill you will get a bird’s eye view of the city! There are some stray dogs in the area that may accompany you to the top! There is a lovely cafe also to enjoy a coffee and a snack!
Plantaže Winery

Enjoy a wine tasting by visiting Plantaže Winery in the city of Montenegro! Tour Šipčanik wine cellar and sommelier and taste the Montenegrin varieties of Vranac, Krstač and Kratošija.
